Growing Army is breaking ground at the Community Garden

Over the weekend, we started to invite our Growing Army to the first Polytunnel at the Community Garden to plant their tomato and pepper plants.

They have been nurturing these plants from seeds after attending workshops ran online. Every Growing Army member can plant up to three plants each in the garden. The Growing Army started growing the seeds at home in March 2021. You can read some of their growing stories here.

Why Polytunnels?

The benefit of using polytunnels is to create a sort of microclimate that provides higher temperatures and humidity allowing you to grow various fruit and vegetable plants even when they are out of season. They are also an excellent form of crop protection, protecting plants from heat, cold, wind, rain and strong sunlight.

Check out our gallery below to see how the Polytunnel is now taking shape.
