Spring is known as the “Season of Hope and New Beginnings.” The longer days and rebirth of nature around us can certainly lift our spirits after the cold Winter period.
Despite the past difficulties, we hope that the community groups in our towns and villages will feel encouraged to persevere and thrive in the future so that all ages can continue to come together for support, recreation and fun. We really do need them!

This Month’s Focus
Our focus this month is on Our Local Stories
2022 has been designated Scotland’s Year of Stories. This is a year in which stories inspired by, created, or written in Scotland will be showcased and celebrated.
The love of stories is hardwired into us all; it is one of the strongest ways we connect with one another and share our experiences. Great stories, well told, can evoke indelible images in our minds and bring contemporary and traditional cultures to life.
We are aiming to bring local tales, history and culture together from the One Carluke Area Network to develop a ‘Storybook of Carluke’
We are looking for volunteers to help take this project forward and would be keen to hear from any Community Groups who may wish to dedicate some time to this. Carluke Parish Historical Society along with Carluke Library are also supporting this project.

Climate Emergency and Food Fund Grants
South Lanarkshire Council is offering community groups access to two new grants that will support projects to contribute to a cleaner, greener South Lanarkshire.
The Climate Emergency and Resilience Fund is offering grants of up to £2,500 to help community groups to turn their ideas into community projects such as community spaces/gardens, community reuse/recycle schemes, community clean-up projects and initiatives to increase local biodiversity.
The Food Strategy Support Fund is offering grants of up to £1,000 to help community groups that wish to introduce or develop food growing activities on council land or within council facilities. The fund can support a number of costs including tools, seeds, educational resources and professional services needed to set up new sites such as ground investigations etc.

The Weir Charitable Trust
The aim of the Weir Charitable Trust is to support individuals, groups and charities, new or established, which are based in Scotland and provide services in Scotland.
Applicants must have an annual income of less than £125,000, be seeking funding of less than £25,000 and meet one of the five qualifying categories – sport, health, culture, animal welfare or recreational facilities.

EasyFundraising
If your group isn’t already using easyfundraising to raise money, read on. It has to be just about the simplest way to raise money for your good cause.
It is the UK’s biggest charity fundraising site. It’s simple to use, and it’s free.
Easyfundraising turns your everyday online shopping into donations for your good cause, at no cost to you. How? Just visit your favourite retailers through their website and then shop as normal. Once you’ve made a purchase the retailer will then make a small donation to your cause to say “thank you”. They accept thousands of causes, including charities, schools and pre-schools, sports teams, scouts, brownies and guides, religious groups, youth groups, World Challengers, student fundraisers and many more. The list of retailers you can shop and raise funds through is huge and include big names such as John Lewis, M&S, Boden, Expedia, Amazon, eBay, all the major supermarkets, holiday operators, insurance providers, plus a wide range of smaller and more niche online shops and stores. An average online shopper can easily raise over £100 a year with easyfundraising. The donation per purchase will generally be between 0.5% and 10%. Some retailers – including insurance and broadband providers – will pay a set fee which can be in the £100s.

Ground-Breaking Event at Rankin Gaitway
The One Carluke Area Network Team were delighted to ‘Break-Ground’ at Rankin Gaitway. We were joined by Màiri McAllan MSP for Clydesdale, Councillor Eileen Logan, Councillor David Shearer & Cllr Lynsey Hamilton- Clydesdale West along with members of our ONECAN working groups.
ONE Carluke Area Network (ONECAN) successfully secured grant support from the South Lanarkshire Town Centre Fund to refresh, improve and develop the Rankin Gait Precinct area creating the new Rankin Gaitway Community Space.
ONECAN commissioned Architects to review the existing Rankin Gait area and provide plans setting out a number of activities that will create a more dynamic and usable community space.
The ONECAN Town & Town Centre Group supported by the architects developed the design and plan set out in the flyer below.
It’s an exciting improvement within our local area and we can’t wait to see it progress.
Easter
The ONECAN Easter Fayre is coming to Carluke Market Square from the 15th April – 17th April.
Friday & Saturday from 10am and Sunday from 1pm.
There will be local market traders, funfair rides for all the family and maybe a surprise visit from the Easter Bunny! Come down and support local.
Churches
17th April: On Easter Sunday morning there will be a service at 8.30am in Carluke Market Square led by Rev. Iain Cunningham open to all. Please note there will not be an Easter breakfast afterwards this year.

The Lost Buildings of Carluke

‘Carluke Parish Historical Society is happy to be collaborating with Carluke Library in putting on an exhibition entitled ‘The Lost Buildings of Carluke’ during Local Heritage Month. The community has lost many of its old buildings over the last fifty years or so and it is hoped that this exhibition of photographs and the accompanying talk on Monday 16th May will bring back many memories for those who remember these places while, for those new to Carluke, it will tell of what used to be.’
Commemorating Donald Cameron V.C.
On Saturday, 7th May, the Submariners Association will unveil a blue plaque commemorating the heroic deeds of Donald Cameron V.C. Donald Cameron was born in Carluke and is the town’s third winner of the Victoria Cross. He commanded one of the midget submarines sent to attack the German battleship, the “Tirpitz”.
The Submariners Association has been erecting blue plaques all over Britain
to honour the 14 men who gained the Victoria Cross whilst serving in submarines.
The Carluke plaque will be placed on the gable end of the building on the corner of Hamilton Street and High Street where it will be visible to all who pass by.
The ceremony will begin at 2.30 pm and amongst the invited guests will be members of Donald Cameron’s family including his son, daughter and grandchildren. Please come along and show the visitors how proud the town is of the three men who earned us the name of “A Town Called Courage”.
