REPAIR AND REFURBISHMENT OF
CARLUKE HIGH MILL STARTS

An essential element of the repair and refurbishment of the Carluke High Mill began on Tuesday 13th June 2023 when Reigart Contracts Ltd cleared the vegetation from around the Carluke High Mill, and created a temporary road around the buildings to allow a high level hoist to access the site.

The hoist allowed members of the Carluke High Mill Design Team (including the project's Archaeologist, Millwright, and Structural Engineers) a clearer view of the structures including their condition and allowed the taking of samples of stonework and mortar for additional historical testing.

Members of our community were also invited to take a trip up on the hoist to see for themselves the buildings and a unique view of Carluke and beyond.

This process completes phase one of the clearing and high level viewing of the site.

The design team will now spend the next couple of weeks designing the scope of works for the next phase of the work (phase 2), which will include the clearing of debris from the interior of the buildings and the stabilisation and conservation standard (where appropriate) removal of stone to allow the safe stabilisation of the buildings.

The stabilisation works will allow the Design Team to internally inspect the buildings and prepare more detailed plans and costs for the repair and refurbishment of the Carluke High Mill in the coming years.

It is also the intention that when stabilised and safe to do so, Hard Hat tours of the buildings and areas that are safe will be available for members of our community to see inside the buildings for the first time in several decades.

If you wish further information on the project's progress and/or wish to be kept informed on a regular basis please feel free to send your details to bill.anderson@onecan.org.uk and/or megan.lannigan@onecan.org.uk

The project looks forward to our community's continued engagement with the project's activities.

Another ONECAN project takes off!

Most tools we need only for a short time or for a particular project and they can often be expensive to buy or hire. A Community Tool Library means you can borrow tools for your home and projects and return them for someone else to borrow.

Affordable, convenient, less clutter and kinder to the planet.

ONECAN launched a Tool Library Survey in April/May and the results showed overwhelming community support for the idea. The people who completed the survey and offered to help with setting up the Tool Library were invited to a first meeting of the ONECAN Tool Library Group, in May, and began to plan how to set up and manage the Tool Library in Carluke. SUMMER CLUBS

Street Level

Over the last few weeks both Street Level and Carluke YFCL (Youth, Family and Community Learning) staff have been chatting with young people about what they would like to see in their Summer programme. There will be a combination of both Carluke based activities as well as outings to further afield. After the cold dark days of Winter, isn’t it lovely to see the snowdrops appearing and the daylight extending? Spring, the season of rebirth and fresh starts is approaching.

It’s time to celebrate again!
• 19.3.23 Mothering Sunday •
• 20.3.23 The First Day of Spring •
• 26.3.23 British Summer Time begins (the clocks go forward 1 hour) •
• 9.4.23 Easter Sunday •

It is also a time for ONECAN to celebrate the fact it is two years since the first ONECAN newsletter was published in March 2021. This will be our 12th edition. Originally, the newsletter was created to provide a way for local community groups to share local news and access information to help them survive the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Now, however, we feel it is time to broaden the focus so that it becomes a newsletter for all in our local area. We still want to highlight the good news and source information to help us cope with current pressures but we would like to develop and improve it.

It would be helpful to have your feedback so if you would like to make any comments or suggestions please send them in by 30.4.23. using the email address below.

AGM 2023
The CPHS AGM will take place at 7.30 pm on Thursday 30th March 2023 in Carluke Memorial Hall in Carnwath Road. Please come along to support your Society. The AGM will be followed by tea and coffee and an illustrated talk on Carluke’s Lost Buildings.

Heritage Centre
During the deep freeze in December, CPHS suffered flood damage to our archive centre in Hamilton Street. This was caused by a burst pipe in the property above us which brought down part of the lath and plaster ceiling and caused water damage to the electric wiring. Unbelievably, no archive material was lost!
The issue is now being handled by our insurers. De-humidifiers have been running since December to thoroughly dry out the walls and under the floor. The next step is for their contractors, Rainbow International, to remove all the contents into storage in mid-March. After that we will begin the restoration work.
The Heritage Centre will remain closed and the Open Mornings are cancelled until further notice.

Our work with the local memories Group has now had two successful exhibitions in the library – Lost Buildings and Entertainment/Leisure. We intend to have a third exhibition but the news in item 2 above means this will have to be postponed.
2. We are in the process of writing the information for the three boards to be added to Rankin Gait. These will give an insight into the beginnings of Carluke, its growth and some of its illustrious people.
3. We are assisting with the Heritage and Interpretation element of the High Mill project.

Youth Matters

STREET LEVEL is pleased to announce the appointment of Joanna Howson as Youth and Community Leader. Jo is well known to Street Level, the young people of Carluke and our partners in South Lanarkshire Council’s Universal Connections team, having been employed as a sessional youth worker at Street Level since 2012. We look forward to her starting work in this new role on Monday, 27.3.23.

My name is Rhys Cossar, I’m 13 years old and I started my journey with Carluke Universal Connections last year. I have been a young leader and helped at various groups like, junior drop in. I enjoy this because it has boosted my confidence on meeting new people in the community and helping people younger than me.

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

A number of Tool Libraries have been set up in towns across Scotland and they work like Book Libraries, but, instead of books, members can borrow tools. Borrowing rather than buying has been shown to have many benefits e.g., saving money, saving the environment and reducing clutter.

Members of the community have approached ONECAN about the possibility of setting up a tool library in Carluke and Onecan has launched a short survey for residents to give their views on the idea.

To find out more and to complete the short survey, visit the ONECAN website https://www.onecarluke.org.uk
or pop in to the ONESPACE Hub (76, High Street, Carluke - Opening Hours -
(Mon – Thurs 10am to 4pm, Fri 9am to 1pm, Sat 10am – 2pm)

Sometimes, we have a need to talk over what is on our mind, tell our story or tell someone how we are feeling. At these times, it is important to know that the person who listens to us will not judge us or interrupt us but will value and respect us and treat everything we say in strict confidence.

Listening gives the speaker time and space to explore and express their thoughts and feelings and empowers them to reach their own conclusions, make decisions and hopefully move forward.

Listening is not counselling; no advice is given; interpretations and assumptions are not made.

Currently we offer:

· Face to Face listening sessions in a safe, confidential space within St John’s Church building (Hamilton Street, Carluke). Drop-in sessions are available every Thursday morning between 10.00am and 11.30am. Appointments can be arranged at other times.

· Telephone listening sessions

· Zoom video listening sessions

· In exceptional circumstances a ‘Listening at Home Service’ is available

To find out more or make an appointment:

· Call or text 07434 843518

· Email Carlukelisteners@outlook.com

There is no charge for this service.
All our Listeners are fully trained and supervised.

Spring Newsletter 2023

Last year's Spring Clean saw thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves and organise more than 100 events - this year we want to do better!

Get involved by:

  • Organising a litter pick in your community. Check out our guidance to help you set-up a safe and successful event. Make sure you register it through our members site so that we can track all the amazing activity across Scotland.

  • Joining a public litter pick. Check out our Clean Up Scotland map for events you can join.

  • Completing a litter survey and help us gather data on common litter items and behaviours.

  • Helping us spread the message and get more people involved. Use our communications pack and social media cards on your platforms.

News from Carluke Parish Historical Society

Other Projects
1.

CARLUKE LOCAL MEMORIES GROUP

Readers of this newspaper and visitors to Carluke Library will be aware that during September & October the town’s Local Memories Group (LMG) mounted an exhibition in the library featuring a series of old photographs of both the High School and local primary schools. Those who viewed the exhibition were invited to record their recollections of their schooldays with those reminiscences contributing to the LMG’s project to create an anecdotal history of Carluke, the town’s contribution to the ‘Year of Scotland’s Stories’ as 2022 has been designated.

The library is now hosting a further LMG exhibition covering Recreation & Leisure Activities in Carluke and District which will run until 2 December. On display are photographs and memorabilia featuring a whole host of activities including operatic & drama groups; Rotary Club & Round Table; flute and pipe bands; dance schools; and, finally, the Windsor Cinema. Sporting activities have not been included in this latest exhibition but are likely to feature at a later date.

The LMG would welcome contributions in the form of anecdotes or additional photographs in respect of the latest exhibition and these can either be left with library staff or sent to Carluke Parish Historical Society - email:hello@carlukehistory.com.

South Lanarkshire “WARM WELCOME”

South Lanarkshire Council (SLC) and South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture (SLLC) are looking to work with local communities and voluntary groups and organisations to take forward a “Warm Welcome” initiative.

This will be a network of warm spaces in community settings and public buildings where members of the public are welcomed and can participate in activities and groups and access advice and support.

This initiative, commencing from 31 October 2022, will include making our libraries, halls, community centres and schools available throughout the winter, offering places for people to go.

In order to offer as many options to access a “Warm Welcome” as possible, we are asking our community groups who have bookings across our halls, centres and schools to open their doors and invite their wider community neighbours in to join them.

If you, as an existing community customer, would be willing to open your doors and welcome other members of the community to join your group with no charges being applied to them, SLLC would in turn be prepared to waive your accommodation charges until 31 March 2023.

We are also putting a call out to any Community Groups and Organisations who would be interested in setting up and delivering a Warm Welcome group in our buildings that are already open and have available space.

If you would like to be part of this initiative, or find out more about “Warm Welcome”, please complete the Warm Welcome enquiry form and return it to: warmwelcome@southlanarkshireleisure.co.uk.

This initiative, commencing from 31 October 2022, will include making our libraries, halls, community centres and schools available throughout the winter, offering places for people to go. As well as offering ‘Warm Welcome’ spaces, we are also offering free access to our swimming pools for U16’s, during public swimming sessions.

Please view our pool programmes for our public swimming sessions.

For child safety, please ensure you comply with our under 8's swimming policy when bringing young children to swim.

Funding & Training

VASLan Cost-of-Living Support Grant

On Monday 14th November, VASLan launched its new Cost-of-Living Support Grant which aims to support community groups to deliver new/expand existing services and activities that allows them to mitigate the impact of the cost-of-living crisis in local communities.

The only conditions are that the award must be used to support services delivered in South Lanarkshire and that applicants must be able to start delivery of their activity/service by mid-November 2022 until the end of March 2023. Please note that community groups/initiatives that are not yet constituted can apply providing that they have a relationship with a constituted group that will hold the funds until they get a bank account.

For further information on the fund and to access the guidance notes, please visit VASLan’s website. Third Sector Locality Network – Clydesdale

CCI and Healthy Valleys are working in Partnership with Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire (VASLan) to help bring Clydesdale's community groups and organisations together on a quarterly basis.

The first event was held in September and was a great success with over 70 people participating. The agenda was decided by local groups, who had completed a survey to help identify the priorities for the network and initial meeting. Networking had been identified as the key priority, followed by funding and the need to have the Third Sectors voice heard and to help inform local decisions.

We created a time at the start to allow people to meet up and network which was a great success and there was a great buzz around the room. Steven Sweeny from VASLan and his staff gave an overview of the support they can offer community groups and promoted the Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund and Building and Celebrating Communities Fund. A round table discussion on funding followed. To conclude there was a round table discussion on ‘Have Your Say’.

The feedback from the event has been very positive and another outcome that has came out of the event is that VASLan are holding a funding workshop in Jan in Clydesdale – please contact VASLan for more details Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire (vaslan.org.uk).

The 2nd event is taking place on Friday 2nd December in The Fountain, Lesmahagow (10-12pm) – the intention is to rotate the area for each meeting. The agenda, which has been formatted based entirely on the results and feedback from the issues raised at the first event in September includes 5 community organisations taking the spotlight and giving a presentation on who they are and what they do. The plan is to continue this at all future meetings and the organisers CCI and Healthy Valleys welcome any group to get in touch if they wish to be the next spotlight group (Please email Ruth at CCI to be put on the list ruth@cciweb.org.uk). There is also going to be information from the Community Engagement Team and VASLan on what they do and what support they can offer the Third Sector.

To book a place please follow this link https://ClydesdaleLocalityNetwork.eventbrite.co.uk

Please check that your group/organisation has been invited and if not please get in touch with Lorna from Healthy Valleys on lorna@healthyvalleys.org.uk so we can invite your group to future meetings or pass on to other community groups as we really would like to see as many groups as possible from Clydesdale represented.

THIS MONTH’S FOCUS: LIFELONG LEARNING

The children are back at schools, and students are returning to colleges and universities too. Whether we are studying chosen courses or not we never stop learning if we keep our minds open to what life can teach us.

There are lots of ways to learn various skills, enjoy new interests and make friends along the way for all ages. Many of our community groups provide these opportunities and are a vital part of our towns and villages. They have done well to survive the Covid restrictions and need our support if we want them to continue.

Carluke Universal Connections
Summer Awards Night

On the 31st August, Carluke Universal Connections held their summer awards night at Carluke Lifestyles centre. The event was to celebrate the hard work, achievements and success stories of the young people, adults and families involved with Carluke UC. Many individual and group awards were given out on the night in categories such as personal development, positive participation, community champion, young person of the summer and summer hub volunteer. The awards night also allowed Carluke UC to showcase the partnerships we are building and continuing to develop within the local community, with StreetLevel, Carluke High School and Police Scotland. The event was attended by over 150 people and it was amazing to see all of our learners along with their families, community partners, YFCL staff and elected members come together celebrate the success of the people we have been working with this year.

Carluke Universal Connections have an extensive programme of weekly groups and activities for young people adults and families, for more information on this please follow us on our social media channels or feel free to contact us by phone.

Developing a governing document / constitution

Once a need to form a new community group has been identified and an appropriate legal structure determined, the next step in establishing a community group is to develop a suitable governing document. The type of governing document varies depending on the chosen legal structure but for a community group in its simplest form, it will be a constitution.

A governing document/constitution will define what the community group is being established to achieve and how it will operate; essentially it is a formal set of rules that will bring structure. Key considerations when drafting a governing document/constitution include:

  • What is the group’s legal name?

  • What are the group’s purposes?

  • Who is eligible to become a member?

  • How is the management committee (chairperson, treasurer, secretary and any additional members) elected and what are its powers?

  • What are the rules for meetings?

  • What procedures are in place for managing the group’s finances?

  • In the event of being dissolved, what will happen to the group’s assets?

When developing a governing document/constitution it’s useful to refer to a template. VASLan provides a template for a community group in its simplest form while SCVO provides a range of templates for common legal structures. Although templates can be easily adapted to suit, it is however important that the content and purpose of each individual clause is understood and will meet the specific needs of the group.

For further information or support with developing a governing document/constitution, please see VASLan’s Resource Kit or contact Ann Sangster (ann.sangster@vaslan.org.uk) or Joanne McMann (joanne.mcmann@vaslan.org.uk).

LOCAL MEMORIES GROUP

On Monday, 12 September an exhibition opened in Carluke Library displaying a series of old photographs of the town’s High School and the local primary schools. These feature class photographs as well as those of school buildings, school activities and PTAs. A small number of school-related artefacts will also be available for perusal.

The exhibition will run until 21 October and it is hoped that those attending will take the opportunity to record in writing their own recollections of their local schooldays. Moreover, should they indicate a willingness to do so, a small number of respondents will subsequently be invited for interview to have their reminiscences recorded as part of an ongoing project to create an anecdotal history of Carluke and the surrounding area which will subsequently focus upon Entertainment / Recreation and then Employment. All the resulting material will be retained by the Carluke Parish Historical Society.

During the first week of the exhibition members of the Local Memories Group will attend the library for an hour each day and their future attendance will be dependent upon the level of interest shown by the local community.

Finally, thanks are due to a small, anonymous group of members of the local community who provided a generous donation to enable the Local Memories Group to ‘kickstart’ the project while it awaits the outcome of an application for grant funding.

Clydesdale Third Sector Locality Network

The new Clydesdale Third Sector Locality Network was launched at St Nicholas Church, Lanark, on Friday 16th September. In partnership with Voluntary Action South Lanarkshire (VASLan), Clydesdale Community Initiatives (CCI) and Healthy Valleys are working to bring Clydesdale's community groups and organisations together on a quarterly basis to have their voice heard by the third sector and beyond.

The new Third Sector Locality Network structure replaces the previously held Third Sector Forum and provides a vital opportunity for networking, support, partnership working and shared learning. The launch event included third sector representation from across Clydesdale, including Carluke, and was formatted based on the results of a prior sector-wide survey which received significant engagement. Key themes identified via this survey - including funding - were discussed, with an update from VASLan, networking and a ‘have your say’ item also featuring on a varied agenda.

The next round of the Clydesdale Third Sector Locality Network will be held during December. Please look out for further information and take the opportunity to support the events to ensure that your organisation’s voice is heard.

Request for Help from VIVA / Villagers in the Valley Association

Since VIVA was formed 14 years ago to provide social interaction between residents over the age of 60 in the Clyde Valley area, we have been fortunate to have the use of minibuses from the Rural Development Trust in Douglas Water, to take us on theatre outings, day trips, walking outings etc. at a reasonable cost which allowed us to be very inclusive. We provided our own drivers and on occasions hired three minibuses at a time to accommodate the number of members wishing to take part

Due to the Covid epidemic all our outings came to an abrupt end and on getting back to normal we were starting to plan a few outings to take place before the end of this year but on contacting Gordon Muir in charge at the Rural Development Trust to ascertain the current costs we received the unwelcome news that they were selling off all the minibuses and we could no longer hire more than one until the end of the year when they would be no longer operating. Gordon could not advise us of an alternative.

Over the years we have had many varied outings and have many happy memories of the places visited, meals taken together and theatre shows enjoyed and it is so sad that these pleasures may be coming to an end.

If anyone knows of any alternative transport provider who would be able to help us with this problem could you please get in touch with me on 07484 305866 or email vivavillagegroup@gmail.com Any suggestions would be welcome.

All current information on VIVA can be found on our website viva.chessck.co.uk

Thanks for any help.

Spring is known as the "Season of Hope and New Beginnings." The longer days and rebirth of nature around us can certainly lift our spirits after the cold Winter period.

Despite the past difficulties, we hope that the community groups in our towns and villages will feel encouraged to persevere and thrive in the future so that all ages can continue to come together for support, recreation and fun. We really do need them!

Seasons Greetings from the members of the Community Groups' Support Team who work together to produce these newsletters which we hope you find interesting.

This Month’s Focus

Our focus this month is on Our Local Stories

2022 has been designated Scotland’s Year of Stories. This is a year in which stories inspired by, created, or written in Scotland will be showcased and celebrated.

The love of stories is hardwired into us all; it is one of the strongest ways we connect with one another and share our experiences. Great stories, well told, can evoke indelible images in our minds and bring contemporary and traditional cultures to life.

We are aiming to bring local tales, history and culture together from the One Carluke Area Network to develop a ‘Storybook of Carluke’

We are looking for volunteers to help take this project forward and would be keen to hear from any Community Groups who may wish to dedicate some time to this. Carluke Parish Historical Society along with Carluke Library are also supporting this project.

Please contact Megan - megan.lannigan@onecan.org.uk - to get involved and help us save our stories!

EasyFundraising

If your group isn't already using easyfundraising to raise money, read on. It has to be just about the simplest way to raise money for your good cause.

It is the UK’s biggest charity fundraising site. It’s simple to use, and it’s free.

Easyfundraising turns your everyday online shopping into donations for your good cause, at no cost to you. How? Just visit your favourite retailers through their website and then shop as normal. Once you’ve made a purchase the retailer will then make a small donation to your cause to say “thank you”. They accept thousands of causes, including charities, schools and pre-schools, sports teams, scouts, brownies and guides, religious groups, youth groups, World Challengers, student fundraisers and many more. The list of retailers you can shop and raise funds through is huge and include big names such as John Lewis, M&S, Boden, Expedia, Amazon, eBay, all the major supermarkets, holiday operators, insurance providers, plus a wide range of smaller and more niche online shops and stores. An average online shopper can easily raise over £100 a year with easyfundraising. The donation per purchase will generally be between 0.5% and 10%. Some retailers – including insurance and broadband providers – will pay a set fee which can be in the £100s.

Here is easyfundraisings explanation of what you need to do to raise donations.

"Firstly, register with us and tell us who you want to support. If your cause isn’t listed yet, you can either register it yourself or ask someone within your cause to do it. Then, next time you want to buy something online, log into easyfundraising first and click on the retailer you want to shop with. You’ll then be taken to their website where you can continue to make your purchase in the usual way. But – crucially – because you visited easyfundraising first, your cause will get a donation."
