Volunteering Opportunities Opened up to the Young People of Clydesdale

The Haven, a registered charity which provides support to people affected by a range of life limiting illnesses and to their family members and carers and supports people across the whole of North and South Lanarkshire through centres in Blantyre, Wishaw and Forth, has recently announced that they are expanding their successful Children, Young People and Families Service to their Forth centre.

In order for the service to be fully established, the charity is recruiting volunteers aged 16 to 25 to come on board as peer support volunteers for the children and young people who access the service.

Becky Rawlinson, Children, Young People and Families Co-ordinator said: “We are currently looking for young people from the Clydesdale community aged 16-25 to come on board with our new Children, Young People and Families Service in our Forth Centre. We are looking for individuals who are looking to gain experience working with children, who are looking to build their CV for the future or that simply like the idea of meeting other people and giving back to the community.

“This opportunity requires an enthusiastic and reliable individual to commit to regularly helping out at The Haven by taking part in delivering fun activities to groups of children affected by loss, grief and bereavement, helping with activity ideas and fun suggestions, light admin tasks and working as part of a team. There will be ongoing support and coaching from staff and successful applicants shall receive training on Grief and Loss as well as Child Protection.

“The Haven could not run its services without the support of volunteers so it really does mean a lot to us to have people who would like to help us out in this way.

“If you want to gain valuable experience and get involved in the community doing something rewarding and fun as well as helping your CV stand out to future employers then I would urge you to get in touch and come and visit us to find out more. A lot of our volunteers from our Blantyre service have gone on to gain jobs in the health and social care sector or have been offered places in further education due to their experience and we would love to give young people in the Clydesdale are the same opportunity.”

Commenting on the benefits of volunteering, one of the peer support volunteers who has been part of the Blantyre service said: “I feel that I have really gained a lot from volunteering at The Haven.  It’s been really humbling seeing what the children are going through, however it has been so rewarding feeling that you have helped to make a difference.”

The service has been running for almost 17 years in Blantyre and does so much good work to support children, young people and families that the long term aim will be for this to be an established service in the Clydesdale Community.

The Haven Children, Young People and Families Service helps to support children and young people to feel resilient and strong, enabling them to understand their own emotions and to be confident enough to share the natural feelings of loss when someone they care about is seriously ill or has died.

If you would like more information on how to apply to become a volunteer for the Children, Young People and Families Service or if you feel you or someone you know would benefit from accessing this service then please contact Becky Rawlinson on 01555 811846 or email forth@thehavencentre.com
